The Department of Social Work at The University of Texas at San Antonio seeks to fill one faculty position to begin in the Fall Semester, 2020 at the Associate or Full Professor level. The successful candidate must demonstrate their ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of diverse urban populations and support the University’s commitment to thrive as a Hispanic Serving Institution and a model for student success. We especially encourage applications in the areas of 1) aging/gerontology or 2) military health, however applications in allied areas will be considered. Hiring for this academic position will be based on qualifications and pending budget approval.

UTSA is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) that is one of the fastest growing public universities in Texas and gaining momentum in its quest to become the state’s next premier Tier 1 university. It serves the San Antonio metropolitan area, the seventh largest U.S. city, and the broader region of South Texas through programs and services offered from its three campuses. More than 67% of students attending UTSA come from groups underrepresented in higher education. A majority of UTSA students are first generation students, meaning they are first in their families to attend a college or university. San Antonio is home to one of the largest concentrations of military bases in the United States. UT Health San Antonio hosts the Strong Star Research Network, which is a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional research consortium funded by the Department of Defense and Veteran Affairs. Strong Star focuses on the development and evaluation of interventions aimed at addressing PTSD in active duty military personnel and recently discharged veterans. Also, the older adult community in San Antonio is one of the fastest growing in the country. San Antonio reflects a diverse demographic, with a majority Latinx community and both urban and rural locales close to the city, which offers research and community engagement opportunities that are rare in the field of Gerontology. In addition, three large metropolitan cities (Austin, Dallas, and Houston) are less than half a day’s drive from San Antonio, which bolsters opportunities for collaborations across communities and institutions. San Antonio offers the cultural attributes of a large, metropolitan city with a low cost of living.

The UTSA Department of Social Work, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, was the first publicly funded graduate social work program in San Antonio. It began in 2005 with 17 MSW students; current MSW student enrollment is more than 200. Capitalizing on its location in San Antonio and its commitment to South Texas, the Program offers a single concentration in cultural competence, with an innovative micro to macro framework. The Program’s mission is to serve as catalysts for transformative culturally competent social work through research, education, and service within a local-global context. The majority of our students are working professionals with considerable diversity in life experience and ideas. The department supports faculty in pursuing a robust research agenda, while fostering a collegial, flexible work environment. Social work faculty members also collaborate with colleagues across departments to nurture a strong interdisciplinary research and teaching community. Required qualifications for Associate or Full rank applicants: 1) a Ph.D. in Social Work or a closely related discipline; 2) an MSW from a CSWE accredited program; 3) a demonstrated commitment to cultural competence and working with diverse populations; 4) proven active success as a faculty member in external fund development, research, and scholarship; 5) the ability to work with, and be sensitive to, the educational needs of students from a diverse urban population; 6) a solid record of mentoring, teaching, and service. In addition, required qualifications for full rank include a national or international reputation and demonstrated leadership experience. Preferred applicant qualifications for both ranks include at least two years post-MSW practice experience.
